ABSTRACT

Habb-ul-Aas is a commercial drug obtained from Myrtus communis L and widely used for abdominal disorders in Pakistan. This sclerophyllous shrub is commonly found in the Lower Dir, Malakand Division, Pakistan. This plant is used as crude drug in herbal as well as pharmaceutical industry due to presence of aromatic oil obtained from various parts of the plant. Two varieties viz., italic and baetica of the plant exist in the world; however, no study reported before about the existence of this species up to the varietal level from Pakistan. The current study was undertaken to characterize the existing germplasm by using certain morphometric parameters in relation to physiognomic features. They exhibit high variability among characters, especially for characteristics useful in selecting cultivars for commercial production. Among the various ecotypes, MBT3 possessed high shoot length (29.96cm), leaf area (2.3cm), fruit volume (0.97ml) & fruit weight (0.88g) and pulp (0.87g) and therefore recommended for the cultivar development.

Introducción: El uso inapropiado de plaguicidas en alimentos y la resistencia que las plagas han adquirido frente a estos, han traído consigo problemas de salud pública; con el objetivo de disminuir el empleo de estas sustancias nocivas, se han realizado estudios biológicos con productos vegetales (aceites esenciales) los cuales han demostrado ser eficaces para controlar diferentes organismos. Objetivos: Esta investigación tiene como objetivo determinar la actividad repelente e insécticida de dos aceites esenciales del género Piper, procedentes del nor-occidente del Pacifico colombiano, sobre insectos que atacan productos almacenados. Materiales y métodos: Los aceites esenciales fueron extraidos por hidrodestilación convencional, la actividad repelente se trabajó aplicando el metodo de área de preferencia para la actividad insecticida por dispersión de gas, donde se obtuvieron los porcentajes de repelencia y mortalidad. Resultados: Se encontró a Piper obrutum como el aceite esencial más activo, presentando a la concentración de 1µL/cm2 porcentaje de repelencia de 85% y registrando una mortalidad del 25% a la concentración de 500µL/mL y 72h de exposición; mientras que, Piper littorale a este tiempo de exposición, produce una tasa de mortalidad mayor, con un porcentaje de 40%, pero la repelencia para esta especie fue menor con el 70% de los insectos repelidos. Conclusiones: Se infiere de esta investigación, que los aceites esenciales de Piper obrutum y Piper littorale poseen mejores propiedades repelentes que insecticidas y pueden emplearse en el desarrollo de repelentes, que se apliquen en el control integrado de plagas de productos almacenados.


Introduction: The inappropriate use of pesticides in food and the resistance that pests have acquired against them, have brought about public health problems; in order to reduce the use of these harmful substances, biological studies have been carried out with plant products (essential oils) which have proven to be effective in controlling different organisms. Objectives: The objective of this research is to determine the repellent and insecticidal activity of two essential oils of the Piper genus, from the northwest of the Colombian Pacific, on insects that attack stored products. Materials and methods: The essential oils were extracted by conventional hydrodistillation, the repellent activity was worked by applying the area of preference method and the insecticidal activity by gas dispersion, where the percentages of repellency and mortality were obtained. Results: Piper obrutum was found to be the most active essential oil, presenting at a concentration of 1µL/cm2 a repellency percentage of 85% and registering a mortality of 25% at a concentration of 500µL/mL and 72h of exposure; whereas, Piper littorale at this exposure time, produces a higher mortality rate, with a percentage of 40%, but the repellency for this species was lower with 70% of the repelled insects. Conclusions: It is inferred from this research, that the essential oils of Piper obrutum and Piper littorale have better repellent properties than insecticidal and can be used in the development of repellents, which are applied in the integrated pest control of stored products.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 es un coronavirus de ARN que causa infecciones respiratorias como la actual pandemia de COVID-19. Los sistemas de salud combaten esta infección con cuidados paliativos; sin embargo, existen pocos tratamientos específicos para este patógeno. Este contexto representa la posibilidad de buscar tratamientos alternativos, como el uso de moléculas naturales. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar in silico la interacción de péptidos de plantas aromáticas con proteínas específicas de SARS-CoV-2 que no comprometan la respuesta inmune. Se procesaron quinientos ochenta y tres péptidos con menos de 30 aminoácidos de Thymus vulgaris L., Cymbopogon citratus, Salvia officinalis, Ocimum basilicum L y Zingiber officinale. La metodología aplicó filtros de acuerdo a los más altos puntajes de docking molecular para encontrar 20 péptidos por cada planta. Los péptidos registraron interacción molecular fuerte de los sitios activos de las proteínas Spike RBD, S2 y Nsp4, empleando una energía de menos de ­150 kcal/mol. La proteína Nsp4 mostró la mayor interacción con todas las especies. El 35% y el 65% de estos péptidos se registraron con baja activación de la respuesta inmune a través de la antigenicidad, puntuación inferior a 0,5 y ausencia de alergenicidad. Estos resultados indican el uso de moléculas de origen vegetal que pueden implementarse en el consumo para combatir la replicación viral del SARS-CoV-2.


SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA coronavirus that causes respiratory infections as the current COVID-19 pandemic. The health systems combat this infection with palliative care; however, there are few specific treatments for this pathogen. This context represents the possibility of searching for alternative treatments, such as using molecules from natural products. Our main objective was the in silico study of aromatic plant peptides and their interaction with specific proteins of SARS-CoV-2 that do not compromise the immune response. Five hundred eighty-three peptides with less than 30 amino acids from Thymus vulgaris L., Cymbopogon citratus, Salvia officinalis, Ocimum basilicum L, and Zingiber officinale were processed. The methodology applied filters according to the highest molecular docking scores to find 20 peptides for each plant species. The peptides show solid molecular interaction of the Spike RBD, S2, and Nsp4 proteins' active sites, using less than ­150 kcal/mol energy. Nsp4 protein exposes the most interaction with all species. 35 and 65% of these peptides were recorded with low activation of the immune response through antigenicity, score below 0.5, and absence of allergenicity. These results indicate the use of plant-derived molecules that can be implemented in consumption to combat the viral replication of SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Medicinal and aromatic plants have been widely using in folk medicine as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive agents. The aim of this study was to determine essential oil composition and antimicrobial activity of T. spicata, L. X Intermedia, S. macrantha and R. officinalis. Essential oil components of these plants were obtained by water vapor distillation method using Neo-Clevenger apparatus. Essential oil components were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The main components of these plants are carvacrol (74.26 %) and γ-terpinene (10.28%) in T. spicata, 1,8-cineol (32.48%), linalool (24.38%) and camphor (14.73%) in L. X Intermedia, p-cymene (56.70%), carvacrol (10.96 %) in S. macrantha and camphor (18.26 %), α-pinene (15.51%), 1,8-cineole (11.86%) and borneol (10.39%) in R. officinalis were determined. T. spicata and S. macrantha showed strong effects against three microorganisms. L. X Intermedia and R. officinalis showed strong activity against Candida albicans, while they had moderate effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli.

RESUMEN La producción de orégano es de relevancia económica en el noroeste de México. Sin embargo, los productores para obtener altos rendimientos recurren a la fertilización química, pero su mal uso, agudiza la salinidad. Lippia palmeri crece de manera natural en suelos áridos, pobres en materia orgánica, alta salinidad y temperatura en el noroeste de México. En el contexto de una agricultura sustentable, los microorganismos mantienen la fertilidad del suelo e incrementan la productividad de la planta. Actualmente existe interés en proponer biofertilizantes en la agricultura de alta intrusión salina y elevadas temperaturas para el cultivo de orégano. Las Halobacterias Promotoras del Crecimiento de Plantas (HPCP), se han destacado por beneficiar a los cultivos nutrimentalmente y mitigar el efecto de la salinidad. El objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en identificar termo- y halo-tolerantes HPCP asociadas a la rizosfera de L. palmeri; se evaluó la actividad solubilizadora de fosfatos, producción de ácidos orgánicos, sideróforos y fijación de nitrógeno; se identificaron mediante el gen ARNr-16S aquellas con alta actividad evaluándose su efecto en la germinación y longitud radicular. Quince diferentes colonias sobresalieron al crecer en NaCl (0.25, 0.50 y 0.75 M) a 35 y 45 °C, destacando tres bacterias identificadas: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus subtilis y Bacillus licheniformis. El efecto en la longitud radicular es significativo por la aplicación de B. amyloliquefaciens. Estudios relacionados con la promoción vegetal deben ser considerados en posteriores estudios. Este es el primer informe de B. amyloliquefaciens como una bacteria fijadora de nitrógeno asociada a L. palmeri.


ABSTRACT The production of oregano is of economic relevance in northwestern Mexico. However, to obtain high yields, producers resort to chemical fertilization, but its misuse increases salinity. Lippia palmeri Watts is a species of oregano that naturally grows in arid soils with poor organic matter, high salinity and temperature in the northwestern Mexico. In the context of sustainable agriculture, microorganisms activate soil fertility and increase plant productivity. Currently there is interest in proposing biofertilizers in the agriculture with high saline intrusion and temperatures for the cultivation of oregano. The Plant Growth Promoting Halobacteria (HPCP) have stood out by the beneficiary of the nutritious crops and mitigate the effect of the salinity. The goal of this work was to identify HPCP associated to the rhizosphere of L. palmeri, thermo and halotolerant; phosphate solubilizing activity, organic acid production, siderophores and nitrogen fixation were evaluated; the highest activity colonies were identified by the rRNA-16S gene and the effect on germination and root length was evaluated. Fifteen different colonies stood out when growing in NaCl (G.25, G.5G and G.75 M) at 35 and 45 °C, from which three bacteria were identified: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis. The effect on root length was significant for B. amyloliquefaciens. Studies related to plant promotion should be involved in subsequent studies. This is the first report of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as a nitrogen fixing bacteria associated with Lipia palmeri.

HIGHLIGHTS Essential oils from populations of B. dracunculifolia were investigated. β-pinene and (E)-nerolidol were the main compounds in B. dracunculifolia populations. The difference in the chemical profile of the essential oils is quantitative only. There is a negative correlation between the antioxidant activity and spathulenol.


Abstract Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. is a Brazilian native plant, presenting wide chemical diversity and numerous pharmaceutical and industrial applications. This research assessed the yield, antioxidant activity and the chemical similarity of essential oils from 10 populations of B. dracunculifolia in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. The extraction of the volatile compounds was carried out by hydrodistillation, the chemical composition was determined by GC/FID and GC/MS and the antioxidant activity by the DPPH method. The essential oil yield of wild B. dracunculifolia populations ranged from 0.14 to 0.87%. The oils were predominantly composed of oxygenated sesquiterpenes (34.16 - 51.01%), monoterpene hydrocarbons (18.02 - 46.17%) and sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons (9.60 - 17.70%). The major compounds found in all populations were β-pinene (7.65 - 29.8%) and (E)-nerolidol (9.11 - 21.68%). Essential oil solutions (20%) from different populations presented antioxidant capacity ranging from 27.78 to 91.67%. A negative correlation was found between the antioxidant activity and spathulenol (r = -0.696). Multivariate analyses separated the populations into three groups: (1) low concentrations of α-pinene (2.02 - 2.06%), (2) high concentrations of α-pinene (4.17 - 4.61%) and β-pinene (22.54 - 29.80%), and (3) intermediate concentrations of α-pinene (2.38 - 3.31%), β-pinene (12.77 - 19.03%) and spathulenol (6.02 - 9.06%).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Lippia alba is an aromatic species belonging to the Verbenaceae family. Its essential oils have been used in different industries, because of its biological properties. Objective: Identify the perspectives of the biotechnological applications of Lippia alba essential oils. Methodology: A scoping review was conducted on the biological activity of Lippia alba essential oils registered until October, 2018 in EBSCO, Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, SciELO, and Lilacs databases. Results: Chemotypes I and III have been reported for different biological activities from the evaluations performed on microorganisms, fish, arthropods, small mammals, and cell lines; fundamentally associated with antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxic, antioxidant, and sedative effects, among others. Records focused mainly on the health, fishing industry, and agrifood sectors. Conclusion: Studies on the effect of essential oil are promising, but do not reflect a continuity of the research toward prototypes or finished commercial products. Research groups must unify evaluation methodologies and include in all studies the relationship between phytochemical and biological activity for the meta-analyses to be possible. Likewise, they must join efforts through the National System for Agricultural Innovation (SNIA, for the term in Spanish) to generate finished products that impact upon society and facilitate progress in the country's bio-economy.


Introducción: Lippia alba es una especie aromática perteneciente a la familia Verbenaceae, cuyos aceites esenciales han sido empleados en diferentes industrias dada sus propiedades biológicas. Objetivo: Identificar las perspectivas de aplicación biotecnológica de los aceites esenciales de Lippia alba. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática exploratoria de la literatura sobre la actividad biológica de aceites esenciales de Lippia alba registrada hasta octubre 2018 en las bases de datos EBSCO, Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, SciELO, y Lilacs. Resultados: Los quimiotipos I y III han sido reportados para diferentes actividades biológicas a partir de evaluaciones realizadas en microorganismos, peces, artrópodos, pequeños mamíferos, y líneas celulares; fundamentalmente asociadas con efectos antibacterial, antifúngico, citotóxico, antioxidante y sedante, entre otros. Los registros se enfocaron principalmente a los sectores salud, industria pesquera y agroalimentaria. Conclusión: Los estudios sobre el efecto del aceite esencial son promisorios, pero no reflejan una continuidad de la investigación hacia prototipos o productos comerciales acabados. Los grupos de investigación deben unificar metodologías de evaluación e incluir en todos los estudios la relación entre fitoquímica-actividad biológica, para que los metaanálisis sean posibles. De igual manera, deben aunar esfuerzos por medio del Sistema Nacional de Innovación Agropecuaria (SNIA), para generar productos acabados que impacten en la sociedad y faciliten el avance de la bioeconomía del país.

Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is an aromatic and medicinal crop that produces metabolites rich in chemical constituents for various purposes. The composition of the essential oil is variable due to external factors during production, such as fertilization and the environment, and the oil concentration may vary even among the genotypes of a species. For sweet basil mores studies are needed to clarify understanding about the biomass and essential oil yield and nutrient management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomass and essential oil yield of basil varieties with organo-mineral fertilizer under different agricultural systems. The experimental design was a randomized complete block (DBC), with three replications, in a 2X4 factorial scheme, with two varieties (Maria Bonita and Genovese) and four fertilizations (50 and 100% organo-mineral, one mineral source and one organic source). Two areas were carried out simultaneously (greenhouse and field) to evaluate plant height, fresh biomass, essential oil content, yield and chemical composition. Results indicate that Genovese showed superior height and biomass yield when mineral or organic fertilizer was used at the greenhouse. Organo-mineral and organic fertilizers provided significantly better results of biomass yield in both varieties at field cultivation. The oil content was higher in the field, reflecting higher oil yields in field treatments in comparison to greenhouse. We concluded that the environment of cultivation and the way fertilizer sources release the nutrients can be determinan factors in the performance of basil plants; without protected cultivation, the content of essential oil is higher and the organo-mineral fertilizer can provide better nutrient supply to the plants mainly during rainy season.


O manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) é uma cultura aromática e medicinal que produzmetabolitos ricos em constituintes químicos para vários fins. A composição do óleo essencial é variável com fatores externos durante a produção, como fertilização e meio ambiente, podendo variar até mesmo entre os genótipos de uma espécie. Para melhor compreensão sobre o rendimento de biomassa e óleo essencial e manejo de nutrientes no cultivo de manjericão são necessários mais estudos. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o rendimento de biomassa e óleo essencial de variedades de manjericão com fertilizante organomineral em diferentes sistemas agrícolas. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados (DBC), com três repetições, em esquema fatorial 2X4, com duas variedades (Maria Bonita e Genovese) e quatro fertilizações (50 e 100% organomineral, uma fonte mineral e uma fonte orgânica). Duas áreas foram realizadas simultaneamente (estufa e campo) para avaliar a altura da planta, biomassa fresca, teor de óleo essencial, rendimento e composição química. Os resultados indicam que Genovese apresentou altura e rendimento de biomassa superior quando o fertilizante mineral ou orgânico foi utilizado na estufa. Os fertilizantes organominerais e orgânicos proporcionaram resultados significativamente melhores do rendimento de biomassa em ambas as variedades no cultivo de campo. O teor de óleo foi maior no campo, refletindo maiores rendimentos de óleo em tratamentos de campo em comparação com estufa. Concluímos que o ambiente de cultivo e a forma como as fontes de fertilizantes liberam os nutrientes podem ser fatores determinantes no desempenho das plantas de manjericão; sem cultivo protegido, o teor de óleo essencial é maior e o fertilizante organomineral pode fornecer um melhor suprimento de nutrientes para as plantas principalmente durante a estação chuvosa.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In recent years, increasing interest in natural and traditional plants, which are an integral part of rural life, has been observed because of health concerns and new social trends. In this regard, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are becoming more popular among consumers. The purpose of this research is to investigate consumers' attitudes and behaviors toward MAPs in order to identify possible distinct consumer group and examine its potential linkage to the characteristics of the consumers' demographic and socio-economic status. To detect the perceived differences among consumers, the principal component and k-means cluster analysis were performed using the data from a face-to-face survey (n=420) conducted in five major cities in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The analysis allows segmenting the market into three homogenous clusters that have distinctive behavioral, attitudinal, and socio-demographic profiles. This segmentation is particularly effective for the dynamics and further expansion of the MAP sector as an important source for rural life.


RESUMO: Nos últimos anos, o interesse crescente em plantas naturais e tradicionais, que são parte integrante da vida rural, tem sido observado devido a preocupações com a saúde e novas tendências sociais. A este respeito, plantas medicinais e aromáticas (PMA) estão se tornando mais populares entre os consumidores. O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar as atitudes e comportamentos dos consumidores em relação às PMA, a fim de identificar possíveis grupos de consumidores distintos e examinar sua potencial ligação com as características do status demográfico e socioeconômico dos consumidores. Para detectar as diferenças percebidas entre os consumidores, a análise de componentes principais e a análise de cluster k-means foram realizadas usando os dados de uma pesquisa face a face (n=420) realizada em cinco grandes cidades da região mediterrânea da Turquia. A análise permite segmentar o mercado em três clusters homogêneos que possuem perfis comportamentais, atitudinais e sociodemográficos distintos. Esta segmentação é particularmente eficaz para a dinâmica e expansão do setor PMA como uma fonte importante para a vida rural.

ABSTRACT Objective. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of different plant essence oil supplementation to TMR, concentrate and hay on methanogenesis and at 2, 8 and 24 hours (h) using in vitro gas production technique in cattle. Material and methods. Three fistulated Holstein dairy cows were used for rumen fluid collection for application of in vitro gas production technique. Four essence oils (T. vulgaris, O. vulgare, S. aromaticum, Z. officinale) were used as plant extracts. Results. Essence oil supplementation, particularly at increased doses, significantly decreased methane production for TMR, concentrate and hay at 8 and 24 h compared to negative and positive control groups (p<0.05). Among all plant extracts, Syzygium 200 ppm supplementation resulted the lowest methane production values (p<0.05). While methane production at 24 h in positive control groups were recorded respectively as 10.45, 10.75 and 10.07 for TMR, concentrate and hay, the values in Syzygium 200 ppm group were recorded respectively as 1.65, 3.28 and 1.98 for these feed groups. Conclusions. The findings of the study indicate that increased doses of essence oil supplementation significantly decrease methane production in ruminants. Hence, it is suggested that essence oil will be highly beneficial in ruminant nutrition.


RESUMEN Objectivo. El objectivo del presente estudio es determin que el efecto de diferentes suplementos de aceite de esencia de la planta es de TMR, concentrado y heno en la metanogénesis ya los 2, 8 y 24 horas (h) utilizando la técnica in vitro de producciόn de gas en los bovinos. Material y métodos. Tres vacas lecheras Holstein fistulados se utilizaron para la acumulación de líquido ruminal para la aplicación de la técnica in vitro de producción de gas en. Cuatro aceites esenciales (T.vulgaris, O.vulgare, S.aromaticum, Z.officinale) fueron utilizadas como extractos de plantas. Resultados. La administración de suplementos de aceite de esencia, particularmente a elevadas dosis, disminoyó significativamente la producción de metano de TMR, se concentran y heno a las 8 y las 24 h en comparación con los grupos negativos y positivos de control (p<0.05). Entre todos los extractos de plantas, Syzgium 200 suplementación ppm de corrientes de aire los valores de producción de metano màs bajas (p<0.05). Mientras que la producción de metano a las 24 h en los grupos de control positivos, respectivamente, como 10.45, 10.75 y 10.07 am para TMR, concentrarse y heno, los valores de Syzygium grupo de 200 ppm se registraron, respectivamente 1.65, 3.28 y 1.98 para los thes grupos alimentar. Conclusiones. Los resultados del estudio indican que las dosis elevadas de suplementos de aceite de esencia para disminuir significativamanente la producción de metano en rumiantes. Por lo tanto, se sugiere que el aceite de esencia será altamente beneficioso en la nutrición de rumiantes.

Aloysia polystachya and Lippia turbinata are medicinal and aromatic plants. Nevertheless, there are few reports in literature concerning the biological properties of species that grow in northeastern Argentina. The antibacterial activity and the chemical composition of both essential oils were evaluated in this work. The extraction was performed by steam distillation and their volatile compounds were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by disc diffusion and broth microdilution assay. The main compounds were carvone (78.9 percent) and limonene (14.2 percent) in A. polystachya and carvone (80.77 percent), limonene (8.73 percent), beta- caryophyllene (2.13 percent) and 1,8-cineole (1.70 percent) in L. turbinata. Both essential oils were bactericide against Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 and clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Essential oil of A. polystachya was also bactericide against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29212, S. aureus ATCC 25923 and clinical strain of S. aureus methicillin susceptible.


Aloysia polystachya y Lippia turbinata son plantas medicinales y aromáticas. Hay pocos informes en la literatura sobre las propiedades biológicas de especies que crecen en el nordeste de Argentina. La actividad antibacteriana y la composición química de ambas especies se evaluaron en este trabajo. La extracción se realizó por destilación con vapor y sus compuestos se determinaron por cromatografía gaseosa/espectrometría de masa. La actividad antibacteriana fue evaluada por difusión en discos y microdilución en caldo. Los principales compuestos fueron carvona (78.9 por ciento) y limoneno (14.2 por ciento) en A. polystachya y carvona (80.77 por ciento), limoneno (8.73 por ciento), beta-cariofileno (2.13 por ciento) y 1,8-cineol (1.70 por ciento) en L. turbinata. Ambos aceites esenciales fueron activos contra Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 y aislamientos clínicos de Enterobacter cloacae y Klebsiella pneumoniae. El aceite esencial de A. polystachya fue bactericida contra Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29212, S. aureus ATCC 25923 y aislamientos clínicos de S. aureus sensible a meticilina.

Los aceites esenciales son motivo de estudio debido a propiedades bioactivas, las cuales varían de acuerdo con su composición química. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron el estudio de la composición química volátil del aceite esencial (AE) de Croton trinitatis Millsp (Euphorbiaceae) obtenido de plantas colectadas en el municipios Maria La Baja (Bolívar). Además, evaluar sus propiedades antioxidante y repelente. AEs fueron aislados mediante la técnica de hidrodestilación e identificados por cromatografía de gases acoplada a un detector de espectrometría de masas (GC-MS). Los compuestos mayoritarios encontrados en C. trinitatis fueron sesquiterpenos: cariofileno (15,3 por ciento), dihidrocurcumeno (14,5 por ciento), cis y trans calameneno (4.0 y 13.7.0 por ciento, respectivamente), ipsilon-cadina-1,4-dieno (7.4 por ciento), alaskeno (6.4 por ciento), gerrmacreno A (5.8 por ciento), biciclogermacreno (5.3 por ciento); y monoterpenos como fenchona (4.4 por ciento) y eucaliptol (1,8-cineol) (2.4 por ciento). La actividad antioxidante de los AEs se determinó por el método del radical DPPH. El porcentaje de inhibición de DPPH del aceite esencial de C. trinitatis fue del 92.2 por ciento comparado con la del ácido ascórbico (96.4 por ciento). El AE presentó la mayor actividad repelente frente al gorgojo Tribolium castaneum, a una concentración de 0.1 μL/cm2 a 2 y 4 horas de exposición (86.0 y 92.0 por ciento, respectivamente).


Essential oils are being studied because bioactive properties, which vary according to their chemical composition. ABSTRACT

Objective. Determine the effect of some plant extract supplementation to Total Mixed Ration (TMR), concentrate and hay on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production at 8 and 24 hours (h) using in vitro gas production technique in cattle. Material and methods. Three fistulated Holstein dairy cows were used for rumen fluid collection for application of in vitro gas production technique. Four essence oils (T. vulgaris, O. vulgare, S. aromaticum, Z. officinale) were used as plant extracts. Results. Essence oil supplementations to the examined feed groups had significant effect only on C2/C3 VFA level at 8 h in all feed groups (p<0.05). C2/C3 VFA level at 8 h significantly increased in the groups with Oregano 25 ppm supplementation for TMR and concentrate and in the groups with Thymol 25 ppm supplementation for hay. C3 VFA level at 8 h significantly increased in the group that received Syzygium 200 ppm supplementation for hay. Different plant extracts supplemented to TMR, concentrate and hay significantly affected C2, C3, IC4, IC5, C5 and C2/C3 VFA levels at 24 h (p<0.05). Conclusions. The findings of the study indicate that moderate doses of plant extracts result in increased VFA levels in ruminants while higher doses demonstrate the opposite effect.


Objetivo. Determinar el efecto de los suplementos de algunos extractos de plantas a Ración Total Mezclada (TMR), concentrado y heno sobre los ácidos grasos volátiles (AGV) a las 8 y 24 horas (h) utilizando la técnica de producción de gas in vitro en el ganado bovino. Material y métodos. Tres vacas lecheras Holstein fistuladas se utilizaron para la recogida de fluido ruminal y aplicar la técnica in vitro de producción de gas. Cuatro aceites esenciales (T. vulgaris, O. vulgare, S. aromaticum, Z. officinale) fueron utilizadas como extractos de plantas. Resultados. La suplementación de aceite esenciales a los grupos de alimentos estudiados tuvieron efecto significativo sólo en C2 / nivel C3 VFA a las 8 h en todos los grupos de alimentos (p<0.05). El C2 / nivel C3 VFA a las 8 h aumentó significativamente en los grupos con suplementación de orégano 25 ppm de la RTM y concentrado y en los grupos con suplementación de Timol a 25 ppm para el heno. El C3 nivel de VFA en 8 h aumentó significativamente en el grupo que recibió suplementación de Syzygium a razón de 200 ppm para el heno. Los diferentes extractos de plantas suplementadas con RTM, concentrado y heno afectó significativamente los niveles de C2, C3, IC4, IC5, C5 y C2/C3 VFA a las 24 h (p<0.05). Conclusiones. Los hallasgos del estudio indican que las dosis moderadas de extractos de plantas incrementan los niveles de AGV en rumiantes, mientras que dosis más altas producen el efecto contrario.

Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron el estudio de la composición química volátil del aceite esencial (AE) de Piper marginatun Jacq (Piperaceae) obtenido de plantas colectadas en dos sitios geográficos colombianos: municipios de Acandí (Chocó) y Turbaco (Bolívar). Además, evaluar sus propiedades antioxidante, repelente y antialimentaria. AEs fueron aislados mediante la técnica de hidrodestilación e identificados por cromatografía de gases acoplada a un detector de espectrometría de masas (GC-MS). Los compuestos mayoritarios encontrados en P. marginatum colectado en Acandi fueron cis-p-anetol (46.3 por ciento), estragol (28.9 por ciento), safrol (9.0 por ciento), mientras que en P. marginatum de Turbaco fueron germacreno D (36.6 por ciento), beta-elemeno (12.6 por ciento), germacren-D-4-ol (5.4 por ciento). La actividad antioxidante de los AEs se determinó por el método del radical DPPH.. Los porcentajes de inhibición de DPPH. del aceite esencial de P marginatum de Turbaco y Acandí fueron del 90.0 por ciento y 73.7 por ciento, respectivamente. El AE procedente de Turbaco presentó la mayor actividad repelente frente al gorgojo Tribolium castaneum, a una concentración de 0.1 uL/cm2 a 2 y 4 horas de exposición (85 por ciento y 76 por ciento, respectivamente). El AE de P. marginatum de Turbaco fue más activo contra las larvas del Spodoptera littoralis (Porcentaje de inhibición de la alimentación, porcentaje FR = 80,6) y se observó una elevada inhibición de asentamiento de Myzus persicae y Rhopalosiphum padi (porcentaje SI = 87,9% y 86,4%).

ABSTRACT

RESUMOPatchouli é uma espécie aromática pertencente à família Lamiaceae que possui óleo essencial com alto valor comercial devido à aplicação nas indústrias de higiene, cosméticos e perfumarias. Considerando as características voláteis e estruturas de armazenamento em diferentes órgãos das plantas aromáticas, a determinação de métodos de secagem é de extrema importância e pode afetar tanto o rendimento como a composição do óleo essencial. Este trabalho teve como objetivo principal avaliar o teor e a composição do óleo essencial de patchouli após secagem por diferentes períodos em estufa e a temperatura ambiente. O experimento foi realizado durante o mês de fevereiro de 2011 em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2X6, correspondente a dois métodos de secagem (estufa 65ºC e temperatura ambiente) e seis tempos para o início da extração do óleo essencial após a (0, 2, 4,6,8 e 10 dias após a colheita),com três repetições. O óleo essencial foi extraído por meio hidrodestilação em aparelho graduado de Clevenger e os constituintes do óleo essencial foram analisados por cromatografia em fase gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas. Houve interação significativa entre os métodos e tempos de secagem tanto para o teor como para a composição do óleo essencial. A secagem das plantas por dois dias em estufa a 65ºC aumentou o teor de óleo essencial, após este período houve redução significativa. Para as folhas secas em temperatura ambiente, o teor de óleo essencial foi superior aos quatro e aos seis dias após a colheita. Comparando-se os métodos, a secagem em estufa mostrou-se mais eficiente, sendo o teor significativamente superior após dois dias de secagem. Após este período, no entanto, houve drástica redução do teor de óleo essencial, sendo inferior ao teor observado em todos os períodos nas folhas secas em temperatura ambiente. Os diferentes métodos e tempos de secagem alteraram também a composição do óleo essencial. Embora a secagem em estufa a 65º por dois dias não tenha resultado em redução dos teores dos constituintes majoritários patchoulol e pogostol, maiores teores foram observados após seis ou oito dias de secagem. Quando a secagem foi realizada a temperatura ambiente, não houve alteração dos teores de ambos os constituintes.


ABSTRACTPatchouli is an aromatic species belonging to the Lamiaceae family that has essential oil with high commercial value to the hygiene, cosmetic and perfume industries. Considering its volatile characteristics and storage structures in different organs of aromatic plants, the determination of drying methods is extremely important and can affect both the yield and the composition of the essential oil. This work aimed to evaluate the content and composition of the patchouli essential oil after drying it in different periodin an oven and at room temperature. The trial was carried out in February 2011 at an experimental design completely randomized in 2X6 factorial scheme, corresponding to two drying methods (oven at 65˚C and room temperature) and six periods of essential oil extraction after harvest (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 days after harvest), with three replications. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus and the essential oil components were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. There was significant interaction among the methods and drying times for both the content as well as for the composition of essential oil. The drying of the plants for two days in an oven at 65˚C increased the essential oil content; after this period, there was a significant reduction. For the leaves that dried at room temperature, their contentof essential oil was superior at the fourth and sixth days after the harvest. When comparing the methods, the drying in the oven was more efficient, with the oil content being significantly higher after two days of drying. After this period, however, there was a drastic reduction in the essential oil content, lower than the one observed in all periods when the leaves dried at room temperature. The different methods and drying periods also altered the essential oil`s composition. Although drying in oven at 65˚ for two days did not result in reduction of the contents of patchoulol and pogostol, higher contents were observed after six or eight days of drying. When drying was carried out at room temperature, no change in relative content of both components was observed.

RESUMO Os óleos essenciais são metabolitos secundários que possuem diversas propriedades com elevado interesse, nomeadamente as biológicas. Estas propriedades englobam todas as atividades que esta mistura de compostos voláteis (principalmente monoterpenos, sesquiterpenos e fenilpropanóides) exerce sobre os seres humanos, animais e outras plantas. Os óleos essenciais apresentam grande valor económico, sendo os do género Lavandula dos mais comercializados e estudados devido à sua aplicabilidade industrial e propriedades terapêuticas As lavandulas são colhidas na natureza ou propagadas por técnicas convencionais, nomeadamente por estacaria. Mais recentemente, protocolos de micropropagação foram desenvolvidos para algumas espécies, permitindo a produção de plantas em larga escala disponíveis em qualquer período do ano e sem comprometer a biodiversidade das espécies. O desenvolvimento de plantas tetraplóides capazes de aumentar a produção de óleo essencial nas suas flores é outro meio eficaz para aumentar potencialmente o valor das espécies de Lavandula. Em Portugal existem 5 espécies nativas do género Lavandula, amplamente distribuídas pelo país. Contudo, o seu potencial industrial permanece praticamente inexplorado e em termos de mercado o seu reconhecimento é muito reduzido. Trabalhos recentes, baseados na avaliação das propriedades biológicas dos óleos essenciais e a forma como eles podem exercer os seus efeitos contribuíram para a valorização do potencial económico das lavandulas em Portugal. Esta revisão tenta dar uma visão geral de que forma a aplicação das culturas in vitro pode levar a uma maior produção de óleos essenciais em Lavandula spp., dando especial ênfase às lavandulas nativas de Portugal.


ABSTRACT Essential oils are secondary metabolites plants and, among other features, they own several biological properties. The term “biological” includes all activities that these mixtures of volatile compounds (mainly monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and phenylpropanoids) maintain on humans, animals and other plants. Essential oils have great economic value, being the genus Lavandula one of the most commercialized and studied type due to its dits industrial applicability and therapeutic properties. Lavenders are harvested in the nature or propagated using traditional methodologies. More recently micropropagation protocols have been developed for several Lavandula species allowing a production of a high amount of plants available at any time of the year without compromising the biodiversity of the species. Another efficient way to potentially increase the value of Lavandula species is through the development of tetraploid plants, capable of raising the production of essential oils in flowers. In Portugal, there are 5 native species of the genus Lavandula, widely distributed throughout the country. However, native Portuguese lavenders remain mainly unexplored and have received poor recognition in markets. A recent study was carried out in order to evaluate the biological properties of the oils and also to understand how they may exercise their effects, contributing to enhance the economic potential of lavandulas in Portugal. This review attempts to provide an overview about the application of in vitrocultivations for the production of essential oils in Lavandulaspp., with special emphasis on native lavandulas of Portugal.

Stored grain insects have shown resistance to synthetic insecticides, fact that has promoted the use of vegetable species for integrated pest management. Piper auritum and P. multiplinervium are two plants from the Piperaceae family present in the department of Chocó, Colombia, one of the most important hot spots of biodiversity in the world. This study was conducted to determine the repellent activity and toxicity of essential oils (EOs) isolated from these plants against Tribolium castaneum, using the area preference and contact toxicity methods, respectively. P. auritum EO presented greater repellency than P. multiplinervium, the first showed 100 percent lethality at minimum tested exposure period (24 h) whereas the second reached 16 percent at 72 h. EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. P. auritum major components were safrole (93.2 percent) and miristicine (4.3 percent), whereas for P. multiplinervium were beta-elemene (9.0 percent), trans-beta-caryophyllene (5.3 percent) and caryophyllene oxide (4.1 percent). It is speculated that the repellent effect of P. auritum may be related to its safrole content, a known repellent. These results evidenced Piper species could be used for development of repellents against T. castaneum.


Los insectos de los granos almacenados han mostrado resistencia a los insecticidas sintéticos, hecho que ha promovido el uso de especies vegetales para el manejo integrado de plagas. Piper auritum y P. multiplinervium son dos plantas de la familia Piperaceae presentes en el departamento del Chocó, Colombia, uno de los puntos de biodiversidad más importantes del mundo. En este estudio fue determinada la actividad repelente y toxicidad de los aceites esenciales (AE) aislados de estas plantas contra Tribolium castaneum, utilizando el método de área de preferencia y toxicidad por contacto, respectivamente. El AE de P. auritum presentó mayor repelencia que el de P. multiplinervium, el primero mostró 100 percent de letalidad al menor tiempo de exposición (24 h), mientras que el segundo alcanzó el 16 percent a las 72 h. Los AEs fueron analizados por cromatografía de gases-espectrometría de masas. Los componentes principales de P. auritum fueron safrol (93.2 percent) y miristicina (4.3 percent), mientras que para P. multiplinervium fueron beta-elemene (9.0 percent), trans-beta-cariofileno (5.3 percent) y óxido de cariofileno (4.1 percent). Se cree que el efecto repelente de P. auritum puede estar relacionado con su contenido de safrol, un repelente conocido. Estos resultados evidencian que las especies de Piper podrían ser utilizadas para el desarrollo de repelentes contra T. castaneum.

In the present study, Apis mellifera propolis and essential oils (EOs) obtained from aromatic plants were evaluated as alternative antimicrobials. We aimed to establish the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) from Apis mellifera and of EOs from Caryophyllus aromaticus, Zingiber officinale, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Mentha piperita against 32 Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains from human clinical specimens. The antimicrobials were diluted in agar and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were found whereas MIC90 percent values were calculated. Time-kill curve assays using mixtures containing one quarter of MIC90 percent for EEP with all EOs as well cinnamon EO were performed. The cinnamon EO was found to be the most efficient, with MIC90 percent values of 1.22 and 0.96 mg x mL-1 respectively against S. aureus and E. coli, whereas MIC90 percent of EEP were 1.86 and 20.12 mg x mL-1 respectively against S. aureus and E. coli. The combinations of EEP with ginger and mint EOs, and cinnamon with ginger and clove EOs, showed synergistic effects. Consequently, further studies are necessary to confirm these activities in vivo and to evaluate the phytochemical characteristics of natural products.

ABSTRACT

O gênero Hyptis (Lamiaceae) apresenta metabolismo especial de notável variabilidade, possuindo predominância de óleos essenciais, que têm muito valor junto a diversas comunidades que utilizam essas plantas pelas propriedades terapêuticas. Diversos estudos com esse gênero têm demonstrado que os óleos essenciais apresentam propriedades antimicrobiana, antifúngica, citotóxica, antiinflamatória, anti-HIV e inseticida, entretanto, poucos são os estudos voltados para a exploração sustentável dessas espécies. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tipos de estaca e diferentes concentrações de ácido indolbutírico (AIB) sobre a taxa de sobrevivência, crescimento e enraizamento de estacas de Hyptis leucocephala Mart. ex Benth. e Hyptis platanifolia Mart. ex Benth., espécies endêmicas do semi-árido nordestino cujo valor medicinal tem sido amplamente comprovado. O experimento teve duração de quatro meses. Foram utilizadas estacas apicais, médio-apicais, médio-basais e basais tratadas com soluções de 0, 1000, 2000 e 4000 mg L-1 de ácido indolbutírico (AIB), durante 5 minutos. A utilização de estacas apicais, médio/apicais e médio/basais induzidas com 2000 e 4000 mg L-1 de AIB possibilitaram melhores resultados para propagação vegetativa de Hyptis leucocephala. Para Hyptis platanifolia os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a utilização de estacas médio/basais e basais tratadas com AIB na concentração de 2000 e 4000 mg L-1.


The genus Hyptis (Lamiaceae) has a special metabolism with remarkable variability and predominance of essential oils of great value to the various communities that use these plants due to their therapeutic properties. A number of studies on this genus have demonstrated that its essential oils present antimicrobial, antifungal, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-HIV and insecticidal activities. However, few studies have focused on the sustainable exploitation of these species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different types of cuttings and different concentrations of indolebutyric acid (IBA) on the survival, growth and rooting rates of cuttings from Hyptis leucocephala Mart. ex Benth. and Hyptis platanifolia Mart. ex Benth., species endemic to the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil and with largely proven medicinal value. The experiment lasted four months. Apical, middle-apical, middle-basal and basal cuttings were treated with 0, 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg L-1 IBA solutions for 5 min. The use of apical, middle-apical and middle-basal cuttings induced by 2000 and 4000 mg L-1 IBA led to the best results for vegetative propagation of H. leucocephala. For H. platanifolia, the best results were obtained using middle-basal and basal cuttings treated with IBA at 2000 and 4000 mg L-1.

O óleo essencial de Lavandula dentata L. possui importância econômica devido à utilização nas indústrias farmacêutica, cosmética e de higiene pessoal. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o teor e a composição do óleo essencial de inflorescências e folhas de lavanda em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 3, sendo três estádios de desenvolvimento floral (botão, pré-antese/antese e senescente) e duas épocas de colheita (janeiro e abril), com cinco repetições. As amostras de óleo essencial foram obtidas por hidrodestilação, sendo os constituintes analisados por cromatografia em fase gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas (CG/EM). Houve interação entre os fatores épocas de colheita e desenvolvimento floral no teor de óleo essencial das inflorescências, sendo observada média superior em botões florais colhidos em janeiro. Os estádios de desenvolvimento não alteraram o teor do óleo essencial das folhas. Os estádios de desenvolvimento influenciaram nos teores dos constituintes dos óleos essenciais das inflorescências e folhas. No óleo essencial em estádio de flor senescente da colheita de abril, observou-se teor elevado de 1,8-cineol, enquanto nos demais estádios de desenvolvimento os teores foram menores em ambas as épocas de colheita. Teores elevados de cânfora foram observados nos estádios de pré-antese/antese e senescente, na colheita de janeiro. O óleo essencial das folhas apresentou teor superior de 1,8-cineol em ramos com flores em estádio de pré-antese/antese. Os teores de cânfora e fenchona foram superiores em ramos contendo botões. O óleo essencial das folhas de ramos com botões e flores senescentes apresentou teor superior de linalol em relação ao óleo essencial das inflorescências.


The essential oil of Lavandula dentata L. has economic importance due to its utilization by pharmaceutical, cosmetic and personal care industries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the yield and composition of essential oil from lavender inflorescences and leaves in different development stages. The experimental design was completely randomized in 2 x 3 factorial arrangement, with three flower development stages (bud, pre-anthesis/anthesis and senescence) and two harvest periods (January and April), and 5 replicates. The essential oil samples were obtained by hydrodistillation, and the compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). There was an interaction between the factors harvest time and flower development on essential oil yield of inflorescences, and a superior average was observed for flower buds harvested in January. The development stages did not alter the essential oil yield of leaves. The development stages influenced the levels of compounds of the essential oil from inflorescences and leaves. For essential oil in senescent flower stage harvested in April, there was a high level of 1,8-cineol, whereas in the remaining development stages, the levels were lower in both harvest times. The levels of camphor increased in the pre-anthesis/anthesis and senescence in January harvest. The essential oil from leaves presented higher levels of 1,8-cineol in branches with flowers in pre-anthesis/anthesis. Camphor and fenchone levels were higher in branches with buds. The essential oil from leaves of branches with buds and senescent flowers showed higher levels of linalool than that from inflorescences.
